Green Dot


Green Dot is one of UCM’s primary approachs to reducing power-based personal violence on campus and in our community. Green Dot empowers students, faculty, and staff to safely intervene in situations of sexual assault, dating and domestic violence, and stalking by teaching bystander intervention skills and creating a culture of intolerance for power-based personal violence.

Request an Overview

In a 30-45 minute Green Dot Overview, you'll learn basic skills needed to effectively intervene in potentially problematic situations.

Overviews can be adapted for specific student groups, faculty, and staff.

These can be done in-person with proper social distancing or virtually through Zoom.

Attend a Training

The Green Dot Bystander Intervention Training is a 5 hour in-depth workshop that includes interactive opportunities to practice bystander intervention skills and real-life scenarios.

Our office seeks students, faculty and staff who have social influence on our campus for this training, to support them in creating a campus culture that does not tolerate violence.

Submit a Nomination

We want to train and educate those on our campus with social influence to shift campus norms. If you know a student, faculty, or staff member whom you believe has the ability to influence their peers and colleagues, please nominate them for our training. Our Green Dot Team will reach out to those nominated to gauge their interest in participating in a training.

What’s with the Green Dot?

Picture a map of our campus...

Now place a red dot on that map: that red dot represents a moment in time in which somebody uses their words, actions, or behavior to perpetuate violence in our community. A red dot can be the moment when somebody uses their words to harm or harass someone, raises their fist to another in violence, or initiates sexual contact without consent. Over time red dots accumulate on our map, much like you would see a map filled with cases of an illness, and we can see a community being impacted by violence.

Hope and help comes in the form of a green dot!

Imagine that same map of our community again; instead of imagining a red dot on our map, picture a green dot. A green dot also represents a moment in time, but this time when somebody uses their words, actions, or behavior to combat or negate violence in our community. A green dot can be the moment it takes to check in on a person and ask "Are you okay?" A green dot can be the moment it takes for somebody to create a disturbance and diffuse a situation.

Imagine that each time someone takes an action to combat or negate violence in our community, a green dot is placed on that map. Instead of having a map filled with red dots, we have a map overwhelmingly glowing green with moments of time where people have said "violence is not tolerated in my community, and I am doing my part to prevent violence"; this map is the vision of Green Dot.

Whiteman Air Force Base

A sexual assault response coordinator at Whiteman Air Force Base can be used as a point of contact for confidential reporting of sexual assault for military members and their families. The base has a 24-hour sexual response advocate system to provide victim care including support through reporting and court processes.

Lee’s Summit Medical Center Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner

If you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted, the Lee’s Summit Medical Center has a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) who can examine you and fulfill clinical requirements to perform forensic examinations of patients who report sexual assault. The SANE provides comprehensive care and has the expertise to offer effective courtroom testimony.

Toolkits for Faculty and Staff

Faculty Toolkit

This toolkit provides faculty with additional ways to be proactive in creating a culture intolerant of violence and believes we can each do our part. You will find activities, assignments, and discussion topics to help generate ideas. 

Suggested Syllabus Statement:

The University of Central Missouri is committed to creating a culture that is intolerant of violence and believes that each of us can do our part to reduce and eliminate violence. I support our Green Dot initiative that teaches bystander intervention to equip our students with the skills to intervene in high risk situations. I believe each student deserves a safe environment to pursue an education, and I understand the devastating impact forms of power-based personal violence (i.e. sexual assault, dating/domestic violence, and stalking) may have. If you or someone you know has experienced some form of power-based personal violence you can find confidential resources with the following:

Administrative Staff Toolkit

To effectively reduce and eliminate violence on our campus we need visible support from top administrators. The toolkit provides manageable ways an administrative staff member may show their support for Green Dot and the value of creating a culture that is intolerant of violence and where each of us do our part to prevent violence.

Student Affairs and Staff Toolkit

Unexpected messengers play a key role in violence reduction on our college campuses. The toolkit provides practical and manageable ways staff members can use their role to promote Green Dot.

Residential Life Toolkits

These toolkits provide additional activities CAs can use to engage their floors or halls in actively learning and practicing bystander invention skills. Residential Life staff should seek support from the Health Promotion office before planning to lead the activities due to the sensitive nature of power-based personal violence.
